Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Sick ferret [it's not (insulinoma)]
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi there,

We know by now that my ferret doesn't have insulinoma. After the
appointment I mentioned in the original post, the vet put her on pred.
She took it from Friday night until Sunday night. She was still
deteriorating.

Her hind legs were weaker and weaker, and now she drag them and it
seems like they are paralyzed. I took her to the vet and she had
X-rays, blood tests (again) and urinalysis.

Everything was about normal, besides her tummy being a little too big,
her spleen has some nodules (noticed at palpation), her lymph nodes in
her neck are enlarged. He thinks her heart is enlarged. No fever, no
loss of weight, no loss of appetite.

Yesterday, when she was still in the vet, she had a small anal
prolapse. The vet thought that it could be due to palpation (although
surprised about it). I was normal by the time we left, but then it
happened again yesterday and it has been like that since. I am keeping
it clean and moist with vaseline.

She is not urinating and defecating on her own. I have to release her
bladder and she defecates little by little.

She is eating really well, drinking water. And she is absolute aware
about what is going on... her eyes, although looking tired, are still
bright and alert when I talk to her.

It's almost as if she lost control of half of her body.

Based on the X-ray, we start her on vetmedin (he thinks it's either
heart or lymphoma). This morning is her third dose, and he said she
should feel better in 24-48hs if it's heart.

But the 'paralysis' is still progressing, yesterday she used one of
her legs to help her to walk. Today she is dragging both, and they are
completely extended. She does still feel it, she has some reflexes,
although not as strong as it should be. When I pinch between her toes,
she pulls a bit.

Another possibility would be lymphoma.

Please, does anybody have any opinion about all this?

The vet wants to schedule a ultra sound, but I am not sure about it.
It's sooo expansive and I already spend so much money (please, don't
take me wrong, it's not that I don't want to spend money to save her,
I just don't want to prolong her suffering, not getting answers and
being bankrupt...

Thank you so much for all of you that have helped me! I appreciate it.

Rita
