Hi, Rita,
An ultrasound may actually be a really good idea in terms of doing
something that isn't invasive that will help tell what's going on. Last
time I had an ultrasound done on one of my ferrets it was ~$300. There
is no guarantee that it will save Nina's life but at least if you know
what's going you'll feel better about the decisions you make. What is
peace of mind worth?
It could very well be an aggressive form of lymphoma. As I mentioned a
week or two ago the creeping paralysis you see is what we saw in Ker
Avon. It was lymphoma that ended up taking his life.
Cardiomyopathy would account for some symptoms but not nearly all of the
ones you've listed, like trouble urinating. That doesn't sound like a
heart condition. Of course, it is possible to have both at the same
time. Podo did at the end of his life, plus insulinoma.
If you are seeing a certain vet we discussed in private mail in Raleigh
he is very, very knowledgeable. A second opinion from the vet across
the state I previously recommended is another possibility. Those are
probably the two best ferret vets in the state.
I wish I had better answers. As you know, I'm not a vet, just a
moderately experienced ferret owner.
My heart goes out to you and to Nina. You'll be in my thoughts.
All the best,
Caity and the terrific trio
(Ella, Zephyr, and Chin Soon)
