Yes, nodal aspirates sometimes can give false readings
(in either direction). If an ultrasound is done there are
some things that it could accomplish:
1. If there is heart disease it would give the type and
characteristics which would allow for most effective
medication choices and dosages.
2. If there is lymphoma then, other than nodal aspirate,
the spleen could be checked with an ultrasound guided
aspirate, and that can prove quite useful. It's how we
finally diagnosed Ashling's carcinoma. If you know the
type of malignancy then the approaches can be better
chosen. Slow forms of lymphoma can respond differently
from more aggressive forms. Carcinoma still differently.
