Subject: [ferrethealth] Splenectomy
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I have a 6 year old early alter male (MF), adrenal and on lupron since January 2007. Presented with enlarged spleen 2-3 months ago. At that time it did not seem to be causing any issues so my vet I and opted to leave it. Over the past two weeks or so the spleen has more then doubled, perhaps tripled, in size. Today Jesse weighed in at 2.2, vet says he figures 1 pound of that is spleen. Vet was unable to palpate any of Jesse's other organs, all he could feel was spleen. Jesse goes in Thursday morning to have it removed, I'm hoping biopsy does not show lymphoma.
I know that ferrets can do very well without a spleen. My question, which I neglected to ask my vet, is will he have any special needs following the surgery? Will he need to be on any meds? What, if any, risks does he face living without a spleen? Anything else I should know about caring for a spleen less (spleen free?) ferret?
I've been through a good number of surgeries with my kids but this will be my first splenectomy. I would appreciate knowing what to expect following the surgery.
