Karen, I have been through at least three splenectomies and have not had to make any lifestyle changes. My latest was Madison, just a few weeks ago. I provided post-op care the same as I do for any major surgery. He was not put on antibiotics afterward, though certainly was on pain meds for a few days. He lost about 6 oz. following his surgery. His also was a sudden thing. His spleen was noted to be large early on but all of a sudden, it got HUGE!
