Subject: [ferrethealth] Questions about the loss of my Pogo and my decision made
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

ON 2-7-09 Saturday, we were able to reach one of our vets and had him come in on an emergency visit. At that time, we had noticed that Pogo had a swollen area under her chin and she refused to open her mouth.

He looked at her - did no blood work at that time (and I fault myself for not asking for it ).

He gave her 20 cc subcutaneous fluids, 0.20 Dexamethasone NaPh Injectable, 0.20 Polyflex 200 mg/ml and sent us home with Clindamycin Liquid 0.2cc every 12 hours, and Pred 0.3 mi once daily.

He noted on his Objective Section - abnormalities - Oral Cavity, Necrotic tissure in left mandible swollen and red, SUSPECT BIT INTO ELECTRIC CORD OR abscessed tooth.

I force fed her as best I could and continued with sub q fluids until she could be seen again on Monday.

On Monday, she was seen and under his OBJECTIVE SECTION: very weak & pale, hemorrhages under back where subq fluids given and on rr toe.

Under Assessment Section he notes:
Abscessed tooth ( prior to this, he really leaned toward the electric cord ) and swelling under jaw is improving not as red or swollen.
At this time I asked for a CBC and Chem Panel - also noted
thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, grave prognosis.

I am not sure as to if I am questioning the vet or myself. Should she have been transfused? For those of you who know much more than I - I would like to know with the information listed above, and the graveness of Pogo's condition did I give up too soon?

Moderators, I hope I have given all the numbers and info needed. To the vets and others who may know that I hope will look at this and give me some input - I thank you in advance.

Pogo was one of the shelter ferrets and we dearly miss her. If my decision to let her go was wrong - I want to know this as well.

Thanks,
Cindy Scheidt
