Subject: RE: [ferrethealth] what vaccinations to give
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi,

I agree with Sukie that the vaccine most vets give for distemper today
is Merial Purevax. It has less adverse reactions that others.

If a ferret has had a very strong adverse reaction to Merial Purevax
then Galaxy is probably the best remaining alternative. Our former vet,
now retired, also used Ft. Dodge, which was definitely off label for
ferrets and is untested in ferrets AFAIK. He felt that if Purevax
wasn't an option with a given ferret that it was likely that the off
label Ft. Dodge would likely offer protection against distemper and was
better than nothing. He also used it before Purevax was available when
Fervac caused problems.

Please note that I am not a vet and I am not making recommendations. I
am just letting folks know what was historically used for some of my
ferrets in case the information is useful.

All the best,
Caity and the terrific trio
(Chin Soon, Ella, Zephyr)
