Subject: [ferrethealth] Uno had setback after stopping amoxicillin
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
After 2 days of stopping amoxicillin on Uno, he started back to where he was on day one! He ate very little, grinding teeth slightly and lethargic. A call to the vets and Uno is back on Amoxicillin for 30 days plus subq fluids of 15 cc for 5 days once daily. After one day, he started eating again, not all but was eating a bit more. Day 2 of his amoxi and fluids and he is back to himself again. I separated Uno from his cagesmates in a makeshift pen using 6 of the Marshall type playpen panels. I put a clean ferret pan in with shredded newspaper towards the back hoping he would unrinate towards the front so I could use a needle and syringe to suck up some of his urine. His urine was a yellow/light orangey color and I brought it to my vet. She looked at it and said it was actually better as it did NOT contain billirubens as it did before. I scheduled him for another blood panel on Monday, so we can see where his values are again. I really think the subq fluids are makin
g the difference but time will tell after the 5 days, when fluids are stopped again. I will keep you updated in case something like this happens to another ferret, we can have an idea of what and what not to do for treatment.
