Hi Darlene,
I have used Buprenex (Buprenorphine Hydrochloride Inj-0.3 mg base/ml) on and off for almost a year for my Jessie. It is labeled for IV or IM use but we give 0.05 ml orally. She initially took it for a sprained knee. Currently she is using it for degernative disc in her cervical spine and arthritis in her elbow. Jessie is 9 years old and sees the vet every couple months and has frequent blood work done. We have seen no ill effects from this medication and it keeps her comfortable. When she first started taking it, she was a bit drowsy, but doesn't have the side effect anymore. We currently use it every 12 hours, but when she had acute pain in the past, our vet told us as often as 6 hours if needed to keep her comfortable was okay. You may see quite a bit of grogginess with that frequency though. Oh, just in case anyone wonders; we do not use meloxicam since Jessie is also taking prednisone. I hope this helps.

Lucie
