The vet said if we did anything, it would be a transfusion that would give us
about 3 days and then we would need to repeat it again if thinges were not
better. He did not feel that there really was much of a chance. I can not
believe that I did not use any knowledge or sense I had to act differently.

The only thing stated was the thrombocytopenia, neutropenia and grave
prognosis - I do not even see a cause of death.

**Your vet is absolutely correct - platelets are very fragile and do not last
long in the body following a transfusion, even one of platelet-rich plasma.
The degree of profound platelet deficiency that was seen here is amazing -
that is pretty much capable of causing death from internal bleeding all by
itself, just from the process of the body moving. The most common causes of
platelet deficiency of this degree are severe loss/destruction (less likely, but can
occur following electric shock, by the way) or the body simply not making any,
usually due to a form of cancer in the bone marrow.

Do not second-guess your decision here. It is likely that anything that you
would have done would simply have prolonged the time when your ferret was ill,
not led to recovery.

I am so sorry for your loss.**
