It is possible to provide good ventilation without too much light exposure.

I do keep the window covered year round in the ferret room and cover over the tops of the cages where their sleeping quarters are. No artificial light whatsover in their room. They also have a 5 drawer dresser in their room that they like sleeping in. They can climb up into whichever drawer takes their fancy - lots of bedding in there for them. They also have access to their 3-level cages via ramps.

I keep an electronic air cleaner running 24/7 in their room and in the warmer months I have a portable A/C with an air exchanger running 24/7 from June until the end of October in their room as well. The air temperature in their room is aimed to be between 60-65F year-round and pretty well the same in the rest of the apartment. However, in the middle of summer even with the A/C it can get up to about 68F.

When I am home they have access to the rest of my 2 bedroom apartment, so are not confined to their room and therefore, are exposed to some light when out and playing outside of their room.
