Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Vaccination reactions
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

It is too bad that the vet used two vaccines at the
same time. If the ferret reacted to a common
component then there was a larger amount, and
there is no way to know which of the vaccines
caused the reaction.

The most important medication for an anaphylactic
reaction is epinephrine (adrenalin). That is true for
our ferrets just as it is true for humans. There are
other things that are also used or are used for lesser
reactions: Fluids, antihistamines, steroids, etc.
Sometimes oxygen is provided for the individual. BTW,
for humans who have anaphylactic reactions but can
not have Pred or should not have Pred for medical
reasons a double dose of Singulair has been given as
an off-label use. (I guess that has been done with
me something between 6 to 10 times, but I don't
know if anyone has tried it for ferrets, or even if they
could since they often pass out completely fast with
anaphylactic reactions and I don't know if there is a
non-oral form.) May be something worth looking into.

Reactions can be scary and they are especially frightening
to those who have never seen them before and have never
seen that they usually (though certainly not always) can be
resolved without lasting problems if there is a fast response.
So, I think that in some ways they become less frightening
though still very worrisome and still requiring fast action
the more a person has seen them, and still heart-wrenching.
Patty is a medical professional and I am someone who
is used to anaphylactic reactions since we have not
only had a handful of ferrets who did that over the space
of close to 3 decades but also have multiple human
family members who have a tendency to have such reactions
I think that our emotional response to those reactions perhaps
is less of a paralysis now than many people have who have seen
or been through just one such reaction. I know I am not saying
that well but for some reason I just can't figure out a better
way to explain the change in perspective which can happen right
now... We still jump as fast, of course. But we know why the
symptoms are happening, what they are not, and that although
there are certainly great risks that most times thing resolve okay
as long as treatment is prompt with the right approaches.
