Dr. Ruth learned of this:

http://www.dyneimmune.com/

and I asked the folks at the CDC Rabies
Division if it would work well enough.

So far they have not replied but I do notice
that the Dyne page now says "Before the Bite"
which I don't think it said before so this
option may not be tested well enough -- yet.

Hopefully, if it looks that promising they actually
WILL test it completely enough because if it is
reliable enough because then it would offer
another alternative to the current need for death
rabies testing in some cases. Luckily, since 1998
most (all?) U.S. states do accept up to date rabies
vaccination histories to instead have 10 day
quarantines (longer in some states, for example,
CT does 14 days for all vaccinated ferrets, dogs
and cats).

Some states have a much longer quarantine time
for unvaccinated ones (I think it may be 6 months in
most, but check with your own states if you are in the
U.S.) but others do not permit that option, and for them
a bite or even the accusation of a bite can be fatal if
they are not vaccinated. (One of the things that used
to happen too often in the past before the rabies vaccine
acceptance for quarantine was that ex-spouses and
ex-boyfriends or ex-girlfriends used to at times say that
a bite had happened but since healed and that they were
now worried, causing the death of much loved ferrets.
The number of ferret lives saved in the first year was far
greater than the number used in all of the rabies studies
work. The improvements were approved by the states
after the finish of the CDC work
http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/
(not coming up right now so I have to see if changed
but the message was consistent with maintenance being
done on their server)
and the acceptance of the USDA approved (1990)
IMRAB-3 rabies vaccine for one year of coverage in
ferrets by the NASPHV
