Subject: Re Vaccination Reactions Re: [ferrethealth] Digest Number 1463
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Dr. Ruth,

Does this include the vaccinations they get as kits?

I am asking because we had a surrender come in who was just under a year
old and I was told she had never been vaccinated since purchased from a
pet store. I took her in for a distemper vaccination, waited an hour at
the vet's office. She was quieter than normal but nothing remarkable.
Within 4 hours of being vaccinated she was completely limp and bleeding
from her anus. Fortunately, she survived after being treated. My vet
said it was the worst reaction he had ever experienced from a
vaccination - scarier because it was delayed.

Should I presume that she was in fact vaccinated before we got her even
though it was claimed she had not been, which would have been a strange
claim to make? Or does the vaccination they get at Marshall's Farms as
kits count as the first vaccination?

Thanks!

Tressie

[Moderator's Note:
any previous vaccine counts, including kit vaccinations,
though reactions more often happen after many
exposures which is why there is work going on to try
to show how much longer than a year the CDV vaccines
can last, including work at Pitt, and this work in which
FML members can participate:
http://www.ferret.org/news/07-april-titer_study.html
which was begun by Dr. Ruth, and a CDC researcher at
Cornell and is partly supported by the AFA. Make sure
that descriptions are complete and that data reaches
Dr. Ruth, please.]
