I got an email from Sukie, pointing out that ferrets may require more
frequent boosters than dogs and cats. So I checked it online and found the
following, I thought it might be of interest to people here in Britain who
may consider taking their ferrets on holiday abroad:
My vets use Nobivac Rabies, I just checked an online compendium and they say
ferrets need boosters every 18 months...
For the pet travel scheme there's this information:
An approved inactivated vaccine or recombinant vaccine must be used. There
are currently 4 authorised rabies vaccines in the UK:
Canigen (Virbac)
Nobivac Rabies (Intervet / Schering-Plough Animal Health)
Quantum Rabies (Pfizer)
Rabisin (Merial)
The vaccine must be approved in the country of use.
I just looked up all in the online compendium and only the Canigen and
Nobivac Rabies seem to be approved for the use in ferrets. Both are 3 year
boosters for dogs and cats and 18 months for ferrets. The Quantum Rabies
and Rabisin don't mention ferrets...
So I now have only 2 options, board the ferrets if need be or move back to
Germany. I'd be so scared that the ferrets could have a bad reaction when
they get boosters and if one died I would never forgive myself...
