Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Vaccination reactions
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My veterinarian now pretreats one of my ferrets with Benadryl because this ferret has a tendency to spike a high temperature, develop pale gums and look "shocky" after having any procedure like a vaccination or even a blood draw. This time she - Babs - needed a blood draw and distemper shot. Babs had her Benadryl injection, we waited 15 minutes, she then got blood drawn, we waited 15 minutes, she then got her distemper shot, and I waited 20 minutes(by the time I paid and left it was nearer 30) . She was fine. The others have never shown any reaction,(they don't get a pre-treatment) however I think (not perfectly sure, have to check) that my veterinarian now does not administer the distemper vaccine after three years of vaccinations since there does seem an increased risk of bad reactions. I think I've read that the titer stays high for quite a while anyway?? Or maybe I've just heard that the titer study is ongoing?

However, I've forgotten what her policy is on the rabies vaccine. Only one of my other ferrets (about 28 vaccinated) past and present has shown vaccine reactions. However, we always wait for 20-30 minutes at the clinic after any vaccination just in case. Two ferrets in 28 is not bad. No deaths. Is the vaccine in the UK the same type, or made by a different manufacturer? I seem to remember that another vaccine (Galaxy?)supposedly produced fewer reactions, but was not USDA approved.
