Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: kindey failure

I would not give up hope yet with Sassy. Back in November 08 my ferret Xena had a somewhat high BUN of 63 a hematocrit of 24, and was also put on lupron since although she'd had adrenal/pancreatic surgery and spleen removal about 9 months previously her TN test was positive for [adrenal disease].
On 1/21 she was definitely diagnosed with renal failure (ultrasound)because her BUN was 162. After treatment with fluids at the clinic, and my subcues and feeding, at last check on 2/24 it was 108. Her ALT was 100 (previously 94) her TP has stayed around 6.7. Her phosphorus and creatinine were high on 1/21 (14, 7.4 resp) and have improved to 11.1 and 4.8. Her hematocrit is low - was 23, now 18. That is probably due to the kidney failure, since kidneys produce hematopoietin (also called erythropoietin) which controls red cell production. I don't have pcv on my printouts so am not sure what to compare it too.

Xena does not have low blood sugar fortunately, but she also had her spleen removed which maybe makes her more susceptible to infections. I've been giving (or trying to give 25-30 ccs ringers subcu twice a day. My vet said at least 25 twice daily is good. Xena is actually looking a little better - less squinty eyed, not so "tired" looking. I am giving her a chicken baby food/AD mix plus additives, and she is eating (hand fed) three to four times a day. I would give your little girl a chance and up her fluid amts if your vet thinks she could take it. Maybe a small ferret can't manage more than 15 - I'd check and see if it would be OK to give her more. Ask your vet if you could add Epakitin, and Azodyl. Don't know if they really help, but my philosophy is if it doesn't hurt, and vet thinks its a good idea add them in. Must admit I didn't think of a transfusion for Xena, but she seems to be be hanging in there without one. She also has a good loud scream when the others try to pi
ck on her, so her vocal cords are in excellent condition. It gets the humans running to the rescue in a second! --- In ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com, "neal" <leo5569@...> wrote:
