Subject: Re Vaccination Reactions Re: [ferrethealth] Digest Number 1463
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I find the 2% statistic interesting, because in my house, the reaction rate for distemper vaccines is closer to 70%, regardless of what vet we go to (all are being vaccinated with Purevax), or if the ferrets are pretreated with benadryl or not. Most reactions are vomiting and bloody diarrhea within 1 hour of vaccination for distemper (even with a pretreatment of benadryl, or a stronger steroid for those who had reacted in the past).
Last year when I vaccinated my kids I had the following reactions
Their ages and vaccine history are in parentheses

Murphy (4yrs, vaccinated annually, reaction every time except for kit vaccines on both rabies and distemper ranging from vomiting to limp purple ferret): violent vomiting from distemper, not vaccinated for rabies due to a severe anaphylactic reaction the previous year. Pretreated for with steroid and benadryl.

Ollie: (2.5 years, vaccinated annually from 10 months on): vomiting from distemper, no rabies reaction, pretreated for both with benadryl

Barnum: (3.5 years, vaccinated annually from 10 months on, mild distemper reaction the previous year): severe vomiting from distemper, no rabies reaction, pretreated for both with benadryl, stronger steroid given to stop vomiting

Grommit (3 yrs, DMK ferret given vaccine series the year previous): Vomiting from distemper, no reaction to rabies, no pretreatment

Alice (1.5 year, DMK ferret given vaccine series the year previous): Vomiting from distemper, no reaction to rabies, no pretreatment

Lola (1.5 year, DMK ferret given vaccine series the year previous): No reaction.

[Moderator's Note:
Vomiting is one of those over-lap symptoms.
While it can happen with reactions it also can
happen with normal response, so it pays to
act like there is a reaction with vomiting so
that the ferrets are safest but know that it
may only be a response.]
