I am wondering why the inexperienced owner would have said the ferret had TMJ. Does the jaw not open fully or is the ferret grinding its teeth? An inexperienced ferret person may interpret teeth grinding as something to do with TMJ because bruxism in humans is associated with TMJ syndrome.
We arranged an adoption of one of the DMK rescues whose jaw barely opened. It was never confirmed whether this was a deformity or the result of an injury - regardless the new owner was able to successfully enlarge the jaw opening through daily massage. See my post about this case: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/ferrethealth/message/7495

If grinding then consider causes of nausea such as ulcer
or insulinoma.]
