Now, there CAN be causes of low blood sugar which
are NOT insulinoma, so it pays to check to see if
the problem really is insulinoma.

Insulinoma is a tumor of the beta cells which causes
them to be too active.

Insulinoma is not the same as low blood sugar. It is
just one cause and sometimes that has caused some
confusion for others.

There are other types of tumors which can reduce
blood sugar. Their onset can result in a sudden and
massive drop in blood glucose.

There is at least one other tumor type which can
drop blood glucose levels in other species but which
have not been found in ferrets, and I lack time to
look up the name right now.

Also, anything that causes problems digesting a
sufficient amount of food will drop the blood
glucose. If there is enough damage from that
disease the ferret may always be at risk of having
the glucose drop, but if it does not then the result
will be temporary.

Sometimes, too, there may be a possibility of a small
insulinoma just starting that a vet who is familiar with
ferrets may wonder about if the blood sugar seems to
be dropping more than it should with whatever other
problem (for example a GI illness) the ferret may be
having.
