Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Cataracts
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

If there IS already a cataract, nothing will improve the sight exept for su=
rgery and implanting a new lens ( that is what is done to humans)
=A0
I think that technic is not available for animals yet.
I myself have recently had an operation for cataract,
But surgery for an animal is no option for there are no special fit lenses =
available.
But believe me: one who has severe cataract is NOT blind!!!
A ferret will- with help from his nose, his whiskers and his ears function =
in a pretty normal way in a safe environment.
Cataract begins with radiation in the eye ( sunlight or solarium, Use of me=
ds which include all prednison kinds and getting old all of us will have so=
me cataract, One more than the other.
=A0
A docters use of a laser in the eye makes cataract grow also pretty quick. =
All these together trigger the creation of severe cataract: laser=A0beam in=
the eye, Use of prednison meds, old age and sunlight.
=A0
Adding good vitamines to the food will slow down cataract a tiny little bit=
, but what kind of supplements needed that I don t know.
But that what is already there doesn t go away with supplements.
=A0
If ( and i say IF ( i dont know if this technique is used by animals) the l=
ens is removed, more light will come into the eye, so one could see light a=
nd dark.
It is a procedure where the lens is devided in small pieces and taken out o=
f the eye in an operation, or a laser shoots the lens untill it s gone ( bu=
t still i do not know if these techniques are at use for animals

[Moderator's Note:
According to past FHL vet posts ferrets are NOT prone
to number of side effects from Pred that humans are.

The weight of possible causes can be different across
species.

There is research linking cataracts in ferrets to genetic
lines, and to diets that are not high enough in taurine or
not high enough in Vitamin A, if memory serves.
