Subject: [ferrethealth] Sick kit Ferret; several weeks; swellings
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi all. I have a male ferret that is about 6 or 7 months old. He's been sick for a few weeks now. He isn't running a fever and he still eats and drinks as normal but he just sleeps all the time and barely gets up to play. His bottom is swollen and bloody sometimes and his privates are red and swollen too. We think he is sucking on these parts so that might explain that. His skin has a red tint to it and he itches a lot. Around his mouth it is puffy and looks dirty, almost like scabs. His eye lids (top and bottom) are really puffy and swollen but his eyes look fine. We took him into the vet last week and she thought he might just have the flu since I had been sick right around the same time he got sick but she also mentioned it might be distemper. They did a skin scrape to check for mites and that was clean, they also did an eye ink to check for anything there and that was clear. They gave us an eyewash and steroids for his eyes and a antibiotic for the flu. He has be
en taking these for four days now. His eye lids are still puffy and swollen and his eyes still look fine. His bottom is still swollen and has blood on it as well as his privates. He gets up more and roams around his cage but he still sleeps 80% of the time and just doesn't play like he used to. He now responds to me when I talk to him and reach to pet him. My husband is concerned he may not live because he thinks he may actually have distemper and since it is typically 100% fatal doesn't expect Ford to live. But he has been sick for over two weeks and is now moving around more. I'm not sure what to think about his condition, whether we should take him back to the vet in a couple days if he stays the same or just ride it out and hope for the best. He doesn't seem to be in any pain, still has some spunk in him to run (much slower than usual) around the room (only once has he been out to do this so as not to get the other animals sick), eats and drinks just fine, and still
responds to touch.

Any thougths or advice?
