It is very sound thinking in my case. Prior to having dogs, I used absolutely no flea treatment in my home and never had a problem with fleas. Once I got dogs, I use preventive treatment on them for fleas and ticks every month without fail, and still don't have a problem with fleas. I live in Florida, a state notorious for flea and tick infestations year-round. My ferrets don't get chemicals applied to them monthly and they don't get fleas. I have had ferrets for 16 years and have NEVER had to use flea treatments routinely on them. The only time I use them are on new surrenders if I see fleas, earmites, etc. Then, it's normally only a single application, a FULL dose of Revolution. The fleas are gone within 24 hours.

The key is to always keep your dogs treated, and don't stretch the time. Topical flea treatments are intended to last a month, and that's it. If you stretch it to five or six weeks routinely, you are not providing full protection. To apply partial doses, as I believe some said they are doing, is not providing full protection to any animal. That also hints, to me, that there wouldn't be a problem if they quit applying the monthly treatments to the ferrets, as long as they keep the indoor/outdoor dogs (or cats) current.

Of course, none of this would probably apply if your yard is a breeding ground for fleas, because you probably would carry them in on your clothes. If that's the case, you need an exterminator to take care of that problem.
