Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Wardenburg's Syndrome and associated health problems...
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi,

I am wondering whether there are any health risks associated with Wardenburg's syndrome? I am aware of the deafness but could not find anything that suggests health risks.

The reason I am asking is because I have a one year-old female blaze and a friend has a 3 year-old panda male, both who have a terrible, intermittent cough. They are both completely deaf and not biologically related. We go to the same vet, who has listened to their chests and has said they are each healthy in spite of this intermitten cough.

I've had mine since December and she's had hers for over a year. Both ferrets are very active and playful. The cough does not appear to be connected to eating. It seems random. However, both will cough during the night in their sleep. Other than that there does not appear to be a discernible pattern to the coughing. The only thing the two ferrets appear to have in common is complete deafness (Wardenburg's Syndrome)and this horrid cough.

We are on the executive of the same rescue organization and during our meeting yesterday were comparing notes. I said I'd post to the FHL to see if anyone might have some ideas.

Thank you!

Tressie

First off, the problems that ferrets get are more
likely to be ANOTHER of the neural crest variants,
rather than WS, with KIT being a likely candidate.
See:

from a genetics professor
and there may still be at least some of the past
discussions in

Health problems that are seen in higher rates
with neural crest variations have variable
expression so can vary across generations and
differ some among the types of neural crest
genetic variants, but there are many.
