Subject: [ferrethealth] Gizzie - Unable to Urinate....
To: Ferret Health <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Hey all. I had a frightening emergency on Friday night with my 4 year old male Gizzie. I was headed for bed and saw that he was having trouble urinating, but this was unlike anything I'd ever seen. He tried to go so many times it was clear something was wrong. I picked him up to see if he had even dribbled on his belly and even in my arms he kept trying to go. After a few frantic phone calls I rushed him to a nearby emergency clinic that graciously agreed to stay open until I got there. When all was said and done, the vet said Gizzie had a mucous plug and that is why he was unable to urinate. What causes this? Should I be concerned that it may happen again? She put him on Clavamox for 2 weeks, so there was some type of infection. Can infection cause mucous plugs?

On another note, they had to anesthetize Gizzie in order to put the catheter in him. When they stopped the gas and tried to wake him up, he stopped breathing. They administered CPR and a dose of some type of drug to bring him back. Again, I really didn't get an explanation or even speculation as to why this happened. Anyone here have any ideas? Gizzie is doing much better, but he still isn't 100% yet. We've been to my normal vet twice since Saturday just to make sure we're on the right track.

Thanks,
Michelle
