I'm just re-reading your post now, I was a bit rushed earlier. This is actually what my vet called it, hepatic hyperplasia, and he did also mention it being a possible precursor to lymphoma (though he said he saw no signs of that and was not concerned at this point). He made no mention of helicobacter.

This is good to know!
Looks like the answer to my question is yes, there are indeed other causes for nodules on the liver. It isn't always cancer.
