Subject: [ferrethealth] phosphorus binders for renal disease
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My cat has early chronic renal disease and I joined a list based on that for cats. There is a lot of discussion on it pertaining to phosphorus binders added to food, because they say it's not so much the high protein in food but the phosphorus that is destructive. I really don't know what these binders are, probably something you get from the vet. I was wondering if anyone has used them for ferrets with renal disease. I noticed that Nexus' last blood work back in November had elevated phosphorus (9.1, normal 4.8-8.9). BUN was in normal range, 29 (10-45 normal), and creatinine was the high side of normal 0.9 (0.4-0.9). I feed him TF for older ferrets. He will only eat it in soup form. I feed him four times/day. He is also on Azium, 6 drops per day. He weighs almost 5 lbs. (hob). Sleeps a lot and eats very well. Just wondering if these phosphorous binders would be useful for a ferret. Thanks.

[Hopefully, others will find more
pertinent info for you. The info
below is more for other FHL
members who may want general
data, though not entirely.

Reducing phosphorous through dietary
choices has been discussed, but I don't
offhand know if phosphorous binders
have. It would pay to look them up by
name in the separate FHL Archives:

Here are some places with info on such
drugs:

Remember that hypercalemia has been
encountered in ferrets and dogs when
the Vitamin D levels get too high for
them.

this is supposed to have data:

but I can not retrieve it to check]
