Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Gizzie - Unable to Urinate....
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I Had a ferret back in late 80"s who would block up like this. At the time
not much was known about adrenals or prostate, but my vet showed me a technique
which unblocked Winston quite a few times. We would hold him lying on his
back and then feel the urethra. It feels like a soft tube just under the skin
and ends under the penis. We would start at the end closest to the tails and
slowly and gently squeeze the entire length of the urethra toward the
opening and then gently pull up on the penis. It is like kind of squeezing
something out of a tube, like toothpaste, pushing it along until it comes out. Usually
after a few minutes, a small white plug of pus or mucus would come out and
then the urine, what a relief that always was. After that winston would
urinate a few times every few minutes until he was empty, just be gentle, you don't
want to cause any injury or swelling to the urethra.I hope this will help
someone else, Then he usually took antibiotics after that.
