Yes, the timing bothers me, too.
I guess it is possible that a much older
female was given wrong ID papers, and
perhaps the source of the ferret might
answer that, for example if she came
from an inexperienced shelterer.
Another possibility is that it was not
a ferret kit at all. Maybe the ferret
found a mouse nest in the house and
had one stashed for later consumption.
