Hi Debbie,
I had asked the emergency veterinary clinic to show me how to express my gib's bladder when he blocked and they adamantly refused - saying I risked rupturing his bladder and killing him.
If its that risky - I think perhaps this procedure, as syringe feeding, should best be shown how to do properly by a veterinary clinician before attempting it oneself with written instructions. Although I do sincerely appreciate your effort to provide helpful information.

Tressie is right and I apologize for not realizing that
such a warning should have gone on up-front, but it
was not until today that I realized that some might not
realize when to NOT generalize it. Mea culpa.
Any time a technique is used discuss it with the treating
vet first. A number of appraoches like syringe feeding,
sub-cutaneous fluids, bladder expression, and more
absolutely do require hands on training by veterinary
professionals. Also, not all techniques are right for all
situations. This would be useless and potentially irritating
if a prostate were enlarged as happens with adrenal disease,
and if there were uroliths present (stones or sludge)
it could make things worse by increasing the inflammation
of the urethra. -SDC]
