Subject: [ferrethealth] Question on behavior of non Spayed/Nuetered ferrets
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Is it true that unspayed female ferrets go "crazy" and die if their not
bred?

I heard that a long time ago and was told that's why it's illegal to own an
un ultered ferret. Is that really true?

I live in central FL.

Sorry if this is a stupid question. Both my girls are spayed. And I don't
have any intentions of breeding any ferrets (I don't believe people should
bring in babies, when there's adult animals dying in shelters). I just want
to know the truth about that.

Thanks!

[Moderator's Note: about 60% of
them develop fatal anemia which
is why the spaying is important.
In Europe there is work underway
to see if the right deslorelin
implant -- not yet legal for use
in the U.S. -- can be used instead
for whole ferrets. See past posts
on hormone shots and other
approaches in the FHL archives:
