A starting umbilical hernia will change as
the ferret breathes and isn't hard like that.

To repair one they do a little incision -- just
one stitch worth in a normal incision -- and
then the permanent stitches are placed to
repair the weakened area. So, afterward there
is always a harder lump there but things stay
in place. Hilbert just needed two days in the
"sick room" (master bathroom) and was annoyed
about that because he felt fine.
