Subject: [ferrethealth] Help with kidney failure
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Good morning.=A0 My little man, Braveheart, caught a tummy bug which caused=
bad diarrhea.=A0 The rest of my household caught it too, but they recovere=
d easily within a week or so.=A0 Braveheart did not so we went to the vet.=
=A0 He's just finishing his antibiotics and was given "pepcid" that I am in=
jecting every day.=A0 Since he was so lethargic, and is older at 6 years ol=
d, I had a CBC done as well.=A0 He's been drinking and urinating a lot over=
the past couple months, so I had a vet visit/bloodwork targeted for him th=
is spring anyway.=A0 His full sister, by the way, is completely fine and ne=
ver got the tummy bug either.
=A0
My vet called while I was driving in to work, so I couldn't write down all =
the values, but indications are clear Braveheart is in kidney failure.=A0 T=
he one I remember is that the phosphorus was very, very, very high.=A0 My v=
et recommended that I continue the "pepcid" shot as that helps with too muc=
h stomach acid, and he recommended that I come in within the next few days =
to learn how to give subq fluids.=A0 I did that so long ago I really don't =
remember how, so I'd rather he did it first and showed me again the safe wa=
y to give fluids.=A0 He said he's been able to keep cats going for a long t=
ime by giving fluids, which he called "cheap dialysis".=A0 Makes sense to m=
e.=A0 So, Braveheart is headed back to the vet probably tomorrow or Thursda=
y for the start of fluid therapy.=A0
=A0
I read in the archives posts on kidney failure and treatment, and several p=
eople mentioned CoQ10 as a supplement that may be helpful.=A0 As well as fi=
sh oil.=A0
=A0
Could someone fill me in on what exactly that is and where I might be able =
to find it?=A0 Is it easy to give? Does someone know the dosage?
=A0
I would like to have Braveheart stay with me as long as possible, though I =
know neither he nor I are looking forward to fluids.=A0 :-(=A0
=A0
Any other advice, suggestions, hints, tips, tricks, anything I can do to he=
lp support him to have a good ferrety life would be much appreciated.
=A0
