[Moderator's Note:

We moderators have to receive the permissions
directly from the authors themselves, but the inquiry
is so short that it can be paraphrased very easily:

The poster wants to know if the killed rabies virus
vaccine Rahdomun 1 can be used in ferrets.

The answer is this: when rabies vaccines were being
tested for effectiveness only three of the ones tested
were effective BUT one of those was only effective for
6 months even though it was effective much longer in
other animals, and another caused such bad medical
complications for ferrets that that test was halted and
the testing vet personally adopted those ferrets. Sadly,
I do not recall which those two were and I do not know
which vaccine were not tested.

The third vaccine was IMRAB 3 which has only been tested
for a year's effectiveness in ferrets. This is the ONLY
rabies vaccine that is approved for use in ferrets and the
ONLY vaccine that is recognized as effective in ferrets for
rabies prevention.

The January issues of JAVMA carries this information. I
don't know if it is there only on years with changes or
every year. You and anyone else can also find it in the
compendium section of documents in
http://www.nasphv.org/
or go directly to
http://www.nasphv.org/Documents/RabiesCompendium.pdf
Additional info can be found here:
http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/

Using the wrong vaccine will be formally considered to be
the same as no vaccine and may cause side effects, though
a killed vaccine won't cause rabies.

The situation must be very extreme for a vet to ask this. Any
idea why?]
