Find out if the "weight" is actually fluid: ascites.

A chest ultrasound will spot even hypertrophic cardiomyopathy,
one of the forms of heart disease that can cause ascites, which
can be so hard to spot without an ultrasound that it often kills
ferrets before it is discovered. Listening won't find that and
usually an x-ray won't find hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in a
ferret, either.

Some other causes of ascites, though less commonly causes
than forms of heart disease, are lymphoma, kidney disease, and
liver disease, in that order for prevalence.
