Where I live rabies vaccines are mandatory. I believe distemper vaccines are a really good idea. Distemper is nearly 100% fatal in ferrets and it is a horrible death.
Did your vet give a reason why you didn't need to vaccinate? Does he or she have a lot of experience with ferrets? If it were one of mine I'd be looking for another vet, one who sees ferrets regularly.
The only time we don't vaccinate is in a ferret who is compromised in some way. If a ferret is healthy we vaccinate.
