Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Melatonin questions
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello everybody
There has been some posts recently about melatonin
and adrenal treatment. One even said "their vet did not believe
melatonin worked." Well everybody is entitled to their opinion, but
there was a recently completed study at Colorado State University
that did prove the implants worked well and lowered the adrenal hormone
levels. My study was published 4 years ago and also showed it worked well
and lowered the adrenal hormones. Cathy Johnson-Delaney also published
a study where she compared the adrenal hormones levels of a female
ferret treated with Lupron and a female treated with the melatonin implant.
The ferret with the melatonin implant had slightly lower hormone levels
than
the ferret treated with Lupron.
There was also the U of Wisconsin study using melatonin orally that showed
it worked well and lowered the adrenal hormones. This was presented and
published 8 years ago!
Thus there is good evidence that melatonin works!
Nothing wrong with using Lupron or melatonin or both!
Currently I am using both Lupron and the melatonin implants on my
2 adrenal boys.
Hope that clears things up,
Jerry Murray, DVM
