Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Behavioral Symptoms of Adrenal Disease
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi,
"The sooner the better" isn't always the case for adrenal surgery.
We got very good at spotting adrenal symptoms early. Our vets, both
past and present, would wait 2-3 months before surgery for the
symptoms to be a bit more pronounced in order to insure that they
would be able to see which gland was enlarged before they went in. We
were told that there have been cases where a ferret was opened up and
they simply couldn't tell which gland to take. Nobody wants to put a
ferret through an unnecessary second surgery.
Having said all of that you don't want to wait too long. The one
ferret we lost immediately after surgery (a rescue) was almost
completely bald, thin, had a hugely swollen vulva, and had lost a lot
of muscle mass. The people who surrendered her claimed these symptoms
all appeared in three weeks. (Yeah, right, sure I believe that one!)
The fact was leaving her untreated for a long time left her too weak
for surgery. That ferret was an absolute sweetheart. Leaving
adrenal disease untreated is terribly cruel.
When to do surgery is best decided by a skilled ferret vet. You
definitely don't want to wait too long and let the symptoms become
secure.
All the best,
Caity and the terrific trio
