Hello again Karen,
The side effect/toxicity that she describes was more
likely from the ketamine/acepromazine that she used
to sedate the ferret for blood sample collection and to
inject the implant. This was an older, 1.2 pound, female ferret.
I have used more than 700 implants and have not seen this.
Most of the time I do not use any sedation! Just simply distract
them with Ferretone or Ferretvite. While they are distracted licking
up the treat, I inject the implant. For the rare few that need sedation
(or after surgery), I use just Sevo (gas anesthesia) because it is so much
safer than the injectables like ketamine/acepromazine.
As for more studies, the most recent one was recently completed at
Colorado State University. This will be published soon, but no toxicity
or side effect problems were seen at Colorado State either.
Hope that clears things up,
Jerry Murray, DVM
