My sincere condolences on your loss - I feel so achingly sorry when I read about someone's fuzzy that did not make it - for whatever reason. But I have to say that I have had some 20-24 ferrets over the past 20 years, and all but 4 needed some kind of surgery - and 5-6 needed bilateral adrenalectomies with ligation of the vena cava, two had tumor growing up into the lower right lobe of the liver, two had one out a time, but the other out within a year or so ... and I did not lose a single ferret to surgery or complications afterwards. Most eventually passed on due to other reasons ...
My vet was a very good ferret vet and surgeon, and took exceptional precautions before and after - ultrasounds, labwork, x-rays, venograms before, blood donors on stand-by, IVs, a shot of percortin, pred, etc, after. And yes, a BIG dose of good luck factored in too - a dear friend lost one to surgery by the same vet - so losing one does not mean losing another. It is a calculated risk, and a hard and very personal choice each time. If it is cancer, or otherwise life threatening, then I usually choose surgery - if it is a late on-set adrenal, I tend to favor melatonin + lupron - but again, the situation decides the course.
