To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Melatonin actually plays a part in two
opposing functions in the pancreas
which may explain why you have seen
that temporary effect. Over the long
run in studies (not on ferrets) it has
an effect which could be useful with
insulinoma. On the other hand, I
certainly have heard of others who
had insulinoma who had a difficult time
at first with melatonin so what we do
if insulinoma is even possible is we
try the oral melatonin first to see how
strongly the individual responds because
its effect is temporary.
See:
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/FHL7361
for how insulin production decreased with
melatonin.
Now, low blood glucose can cause lethargy,
and increased melatonin can cause lethargy
as a temporary effect so cumulative lethargy
is also a possibility.
