Subject: [ferrethealth] Lipoma in ferrets
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Has anyone ever had any experiences with lipomas in ferrets? I got word back from the doctor about Reznor. He said the following:
"The growths were aggressive and ended up encircling the intestine despite surgeries. Histopathology never identified a cause in either of his two cases. I believe that the mass I kept feeling which I identified at surgery as an abnormal type of fat was shifting around and interfering with blood supply to different parts of the intestine causing his off and on discomfort and symptoms. In other species there is something known as a "strangulating lipoma" where a fat tumor rotates around the body cavity and can interfere with other organs. I think that is very similar to what was seen on Reznor. Unfortunately, I do not think there was anything we could have done differently and it sounds like even if the first surgery had gone perfectly it would only have been a matter of time until Reznor no longer had any good days."
I can't find any info on this condition. It seems that the strangulating lipomas occur in horses and are for the most part treatable. I don't feel like this is how/why he died. But, I'd like to know more about the condition and if it's common or preventable.
