Subject: [ferrethealth] Is Dark Chocolate or oatmeal poisonous?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My Freddie just ate 1/2 of a Dark Chocolate Fiber Plus bar. The ingredients are chicory root fiber, rolled oats, crisp rice, chocolate... (lots of other ingredients) I am waiting on a call back from my vet as it is Saturday and there is no one there right now. Does anyone know any info about chocolate being poisonous?

{Chocolate is poisonous and the darker it is the
more dangerous for them. Cocoa is even worse.

As well as your vet you can call ASPCA Animal
Poisoning Control, esp. if you r vet is not in:

from a Toxicology article:
BEGIN QUOTE
Chocolate: now there is a topic which has come up before! The dark
chocolates and cocoa powder have the highest levels of Methylxanthines
such as Theobromine and Caffeine. Total Methyxanthine dosages of 10
to 15 mg/kg result in gastric upset, but dosages of 40 to 50 mg/kg can
induce tachycardia in ferrets, dosages over 60 mg/kg can result in
"CNS [central nervous system] stimulation with tremors and seizures,
and over 100 mg/kg can be acutely fatal.
