Hi Luciana,

Are either of your fuzzkids from the DMK Ohio rescue by any chance? Reason I ask is that I have two DMKs, biological sibs who have cataracts. Ferrets who are fed a mink diet, which they were at the McKay farm, can develop cataracts because of the diet (Fox, 1998). However, I deduce that because not all DMKs have cataracts that it may be a combination of genetic predisposition plus mink diet early in life.

They both developed cataracts before they were a year old.

They also have adjusted and do fine and you'd never know it unless you looked at their eyes. One of them has cataracts that come and go, not uncommon with juvenile onset cataracts according to the veterinary opthalmologist who saw them last year.

Injury to the eye can also cause cataracts.

I suspect in your case, your fuzzkids may have inherited the condition unless other factors present, i.e. albinism, etc.

Tressie
