Subject: [ferrethealth] Rabies vaccinations revisited
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi everyone,

I know we've discussed this before, but I was wondering if something had
changed or not. Our state (AL) now requires that animals who get rabies
shots get them every 3 years, rather than every year. It seems that the
vaccinations themselves protect the animals that long, but our state has
just changed the law to accommodate this fact. And they did mention that as
of Thursday ferrets will be required to get rabies shots. 'Til now,
apparently, us ferrety parents have done this on our own to protect our
furbabies.

So my question is... did something change with the vaccinations that make it
so our little ones 'must' get the rabies shots yearly? Do the vaccinations
that protect dogs and cats for 3 years not protect ferrets for that long?

Is this finding due to the way the vaccines are made, that they are
'improved' or 'better' and therefore last 3 years, or have they just found
in studies and research that animals don't need the vaccines but every 3
years? And again, how does (or does it at all) apply to ferrets?

Vaccinate yearly, or every three years?

Here's the VERY short article posted by our local news station:

[Moderator: No one ever accused politicians of paying
great attention to science. ;-)
If an incident occurred you'd find your health dept. and
courts to still expect the recommendations of the NASPHV
to be followed, and for ferrets there is NOT the science
in place to show that IMRAB 3 lasts 3 years for them.
See page 8:

Seriously, the politicians probably figure that every three
years is better than never, but if a bite occurred you can
see what your options are from the other pages in the
URL given, if the health dept, court and bitten person would
go along with them.]
