To: fhl <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

When there are multiple ferrets in a household with
symptoms like those of the ECE form which presents
like FIP it makes sense not only to have material sent
the the MSU team for testing but TO TEST FOR
ALEUTIAN DISEASE which can be a better fit in
a number of those instances. Aleutian Disease (AD
or ADV) can be contagious for longer that the
originally ECE, too -- much longer) so knowing
which tests to use in what sorts of situations becomes
critical.

AD is an incredibly serious disease. People forget
about it sometimes due to lack of recent posts about
it.

It is also very contagious and certainly present out there
in a number of UNtested ferrets who can spread it, as
can their supplies.

PLUS, IT LOOKS SO MUCH LIKE THIS FORM OF
ECE THAT IT HAS TO BE TESTED FOR IN THE
RIGHT WAYS, and not all ECE testing is all that reliable,
including some of the home testing.

Seriously, faced with the possibility of either I WOULD
BE ***SURE*** TO GET SPECIMENS TO THE FERRET
HEALTH TEAM AT MSU. Absolutely sure to do so.

See these to learn more about AD and the types of
tests as well as when to use which tests:

and there are more in the very easily used FHL
Archives which Pam and Eric Sessoms have
made into a very accessible treasure chest
of past FHL posts from the last 8 years.

People forget that there are VERY, VERY
SERIOUS ILLNESSES SUCH AS ADV STILL
OUT THERE and that they have to be
remembered and tested for in the right ways.
