Hi Karen,
I did check with our clinic and there is no doubt that it is the Ferret Adrenal Panel at the University of Tennessee I was quoted on. Vet fees to draw the blood are extra. I'm not sure if the quote includes shipping fees, the person I spoke with didn't know.
I will ask on Monday when the person who would know is there. However, I can tell you that the shipping containers the U of Tennessee requires for international shipments cost a small fortune. I ordered similar containers for a study I am involved with that requires blood serum samples to be shipped to a lab in Ontario for analysis and the cost for 4 containers was $500.00. The samples have to spun into blood serum, frozen, stored in special tubes and couriered overnight. Then there are export and duty fees and currency exchange rate - all of which add up.
I have also left a voice mail message with the lab at the University of Tennessee that does the analysis, asking what their fees are for doing the Ferret adrenal panel on foreign samples.
I encountered a similar thing when we had samples sent from a lab in Ontario to Northwest Zoo for a second analysis. That cost me $275.00!
I think veterinary fees in general are higher in Canada than U.S. from the figures people have posted in the past on the FHL.
Its back to the concept that it really does depend a lot on where you live.
