Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Ferret FIP question
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Az
How easy is it to spread the new ferret FIP-like disease?
Good question, but no one knows the answer yet.
The FIP-like disease is from a ferret coronavirus that is
similar to the ferret coronavirus that causes ECE. However it is
not clear yet how it is spread to a ferret. The current thought
is the ECE coronavirus mutates inside of the ferret into the
FIP-like coronavirus. As you know ECE is very easy to spread
from one ferret to another ferret, but it is still not know if the
FIP-like coronavirus is spread directly from ferret to ferret or not.
This is one area that needs more research before we will actually
know the answer. In the mean time it is important to find out
what is actually wrong with your kit. From your description there
are many possibilities, so testing (bloodwork, ultrasound, etc) is
needed.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
