I live in an area where rabies vaccinations are mandatory. In 2000 my
ferret Nyssa, who was two years old at the time, had a severe
anaphylactic reaction and went into shock after her rabies
vaccination. Our vet pulled her through but that left us in a quandry
about what to do the following year. Here is what our vet did which
allowed Nyssa to have her vaccinations without any further reactions:

For three days prior to vaccination our vet gave Nyssa a dexamethasone
injection. (No, I don't have the dosage, sorry.) On the day of the
vaccination she received a dexamethasone injection again (making a
total of four) and was pretreated with benadryl. Nyssa would be
sleepy after all of this but she never had a problem again. This
worked until she was six years old. We didn't vaccinate her at age
seven or age eight because she had lymphoma and her system was
compromised.

The only time we skip vaccinating our ferrets is when other health
issues make vaccinating a really bad idea.

Hope this helps,
Caity and the terrific trio
