Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:kidney stones in ferrets
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Kristin,
Yes, ferrets can get kidney stones. They are rare but
possible. Bladder stones are more common than kidney
stones in ferrets (and in dogs and cats). If they are struvite
stones in the kidney then using a urinary acidifier may dissolve
the stones, so they can be passed into the bladder and urinated out.
If they are oxalates or cystine stones, then surgery will be the only
option to remove them.
Because your are in MA you may want to consult with Dr Mayer at
Tufts if kidney surgery is needed.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
